Take a slow ride around the Summer Waves on The Turtle River at Jekyll Island's water park. This 1/2 mile river allows you to view the park on a float at the slow pace of 3 miles per hour.....a great start or end to a day. Towering 5 stories above above The Turtle River is The Pirates Passage Inner Tube Ride.

The Splash Zone is a great place to cool off with thousands of gallons of water pouring on you on a hot day. The pavilion is a great location for parents to watch their children enjoy the water in the kid friendly area Jekyll Island's Summer Waves water park.

The Kiddie Pool at Jekyll Island's Summer Waves has several water slides and water falls as well as springs of water coming from below.

Force 3 offers 3 different slides in one attraction. Ride down in total darkness straight down in Lightening, ride down spiraling down the twisting Thunder or go down in a double tube with a friend on Flash Floods.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center designed for sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education on sea turtles opened in June 2007 on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

The Center is very much like an emergency room and rehabilitation center for injured and sick turtles in addition to scientific research. You get to see the various patients that are in rehabilitation at the Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Georgia and find out about their injuries and illnesses.

Freshwater turtles (like you find in ponds or in pet stores) have flat feet and webbed toes for swimming while a sea turtle's feet are flippers used for swimming. A freshwater turtle can move its neck into an S shape to put its head inside its shell while a sea turtle cannot.

One of the things you learn at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Georgia is the development of sea turtles from eggs all the way through adulthood. Sea turtles dig in the sand and bury their eggs. Several months later, the baby turtles crack out of the shell and stays hidden in the sand for several nights until all of the turtles are out of their shells. About 100 turtles start digging for the surface and emerge in the dark on the beach and race toward the sea. Many become victims to seabirds, crabs and other predators. Sometimes they head in the wrong direction toward the lights buildings behind dunes because they think they are headed into the light of the ocean's horizon. During certain times of the year, you can see the hatchings on beach walks sponsored by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Jekyll Island Georgia 240 Acre Historic District

Jekyll Island is a barrier island off the coast of Georgia and is known as one of the Golden Isles of Georgia. The road leading to the Jekyll Island Club and historic district is lined with beautiful live oak trees.

The Jekyll Island Club Hotel was originally a hunting retreat built in 1888 for families such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, J.P. Morgan and the Astors. Later abandoned, the Jekyll Island Club was restored to in 1986.

Jekyll Island's 240 acres of waterfront Historic Landmark District is ongoing with the restoration of the buildings on the grounds.

Nature Trails and Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island.....more of Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia

Today was another day to take a quick after work mini vacation on Jekyll Island....we started with a quick walk on the beach.

Next a quick bike ride....this is the view where we unload the bikes to start on the nature trail.....

A quick stop to shoot a photo of the driftwood on Driftwood Beach....

A couple of rabbits were munching on grass while we biked past......

This little rascal was caught.....trying to get in the trash cans.

A small white tailed doe.....was spotted in the marsh grass near the bike path....

Apparently, we were in the doe's way....since she came on out towards the path.

Maybe it is a Doe Path.....not a bike path....you'll have to ask the doe.....

The doe saying good bye......as we continued on....

Our final view....before we loaded the bikes back up and headed home.

Horton House......part of the History of Jekyll Island, Georgia

On the north end of Jekyll Island, Georgia, you will find one of only two remaining Georgia pre-revolutionary structures made of tabby. Originally the house was the residence of Major William Horton, one of General James Oglethorpe's most trusted military aides.

Major Horton was the first English resident of Jekyll Island. His two story home was built on the north end of Jekyll Island along with a barn. The residents of neighboring Saint Simons Island depended on crops in his fields. Major Horton cut a road across the north end of Jekyll from his home to the beach which is to this day named Horton Road.

A Georgia historical marker, on the subject of "Tabby," is positioned at the Horton House site explaining the building material used in the original homes. Used in Georgia during the Military and Plantation Eras, tabby was used as a building material for walls, floors and roofs. Its composition was equal parts of sand, lime, oyster shell and water missed into a mortar mix and then poured into forms.

According to this historical marker, the word tabby is African in origin, with an Arabic background, and means "a wall made of earth or masonry." Originally, the Spanish brought this building style to America.

Originally established in 1976, the Coastal Area District Development Authority (CADDA) is a non-profit economic development lender. In 1982, CADDA became a designated Certified Development Company by the Small Business Administration (SBA). This allows CADDA to act as a vehicle for the successful financing of fixed assets such as land, building and equipment for small businesses at below market fixed rates through the SBA's 504 program. CADDA's purpose is to create and retain permanent jobs by providing fixed asset financing to new and expanding small businesses at reasonable interest rates with long repayment terms and a small down payment.

A day trip to Butler Plantation......more things to do in Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia

Major Pierce Butler (the third son of an Irish baronet) came to America and married Mary Middleton of South Carolina. Butler's sell of his military commission was used to purchase several plantations in South Georgia including Butler Plantation approximately 1 mile south of Darien Georgia.

Major Butler left this property not to his children, but his grandchildren if they would change their last name to Butler. So Pierce (Mease) Butler ended up with title to this property that had been cultivated with dikes and canals for the purpose of growing rice.

The property has been turned into a wildlife preserve. What brings attention to most tourists driving down Highway 17 is the old rice mill chimney that still remains.

The home is now owned by the Department of Natural Resources and is used as a private residence.

Most people's familiarity to Butler Plantation are the writings of English actress Fanny Kemble Butler, wife of Pierce Butler. Although Fanny only spent 4 months in Georgia on a trip with her husband to view his estates, Fanny hated slavery. This caused a divorce which ended with her only being allowed to see her two children two months a year. Fanny returned to her acting career but later published "Journal of a Residence on a Georgia Plantation".

Now the Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area and Howfyl Plantation, Butler Plantation is an protected asset of the Department of Natural Resources and the state of Georgia.
